Magick++ demos crash on windows

Hi,
I'm new to IM and I'm trying to get the Magick++ demos programs to work but without much success. I've only tried a couple of the demos but both crash.
Both demos crash when calling the Image constructor; Zoom using the version where a file is supplied and Button the version where the name of a 'texture' is supplied.
In both cases I tried replacing the arg to InitializeMagick with the exact location of the DLLs on the filesystem however, this made no difference.
I'm testing this using ImageMagick-6.4.8-Q16, VC6 on Windows Vista.
I'm sure I must be doing something stupid and have seen other similar posts but not come across a resolution yet.
