Memory leak in MagickSetImageProfile?

Post by bea »

Lately I had to face my ImageMagick application (actually, it's ImageMagick wrapped for Python) consuming more and more memory until finally dying. Although I'm not 100% sure by now, I think I've tracked it down to MagickSetImageProfile() and wrote a short test:

Code: Select all

#include <stdio.h>
#include <wand/MagickWand.h>

/* AdobeRGB1998Profile, taken from magick/profile.c */
static unsigned char profile[] =

int main (int argc, const char *argv[])
{
	PixelWand *background;
	MagickWand *wand;
	long loop;
	MagickWandGenesis ();
	background = NewPixelWand ();
	PixelSetColor(background, "red");
	wand = NewMagickWand ();
	MagickNewImage (wand, 256, 256, background);
	for (loop = 0; loop < 1L<<20; loop ++)
		if (! MagickSetImageProfile(wand, "icc", profile, sizeof(profile)))
			return 1;
	DestroyMagickWand (wand);
	MagickWandTerminus ();
	fprintf (stderr, "OK\n");
	return 0;
}
This little test program consumes as much memory as it can get. And it's quite fast in doing so. :lol: So be careful executing it. Tested under Windows (6.3.7-1-Q8.dll, downloaded as binary) and Linux (6.3.6-10-Q8, compiled from sources).

I already reviewed the sources from Subversion and found:

Code: Select all

magick-property.c, release 8727, lines 1928-1930:
  profile_info=AcquireStringInfo((size_t) length);
  SetStringInfoDatum(profile_info,(unsigned char *) profile);
  status=SetImageProfile(wand->images,name,profile_info);

profile.c, release 8661, lines 1199-1200:
  status=AddValueToSplayTree((SplayTreeInfo *) image->profiles,
    ConstantString(key),CloneStringInfo(profile));
It seems that profile data is copied twice: into profile_info by MagickSetImageProfile (magick-property.c), and into the image->profiles by SetImageProfile (property.c). But it seems to me, the memory allocated for profile_info will never be released. Am I right? May this be the cause of a memory leak?

We have a patch for the problem you reported in ImageMagick 6.3.7-2 Beta available in subversion now and as a Beta distribution by sometime tomorrow. Thanks for alerting us to this problem.

Works fine now using the sources from ftp://ftp.imagemagick.org/pub/ImageMagi ... 7-2.tar.gz.

Many thanks! And sorry for accidently posting this under Users instead of Bugs.
